SoListen (Tomatis)
Solisten® is the portable application of Tomatis sound training, which is designed by the originators of the Tomatis® Method and the Tomatis Electronic Ear. It is the only portable, digital device that offers the true and original Tomatis® work. The programs provide the renowned Tomatis Effect through the use of sophisticated electronic functions including gating, delay and precession. The proprietary preprogrammed music uses filtered levels, and bone and air conduction established by Dr. Tomatis.
The Tomatis Method
Alfred Tomatis, MD, was an Otolaryngologist (Ear Nose and Throat Specialist) whose scientific training and drive to help his patients led him to develop the aptly named Electronic Ear and the Tomatis Method. Dr. Tomatis developed the Electronic Ear, a device for training the ear for optimal listening. With the information that he assessed from his listening tests, the speaking voice, chant and the music of Mozart is then filtered through the Electronic Ear. This enabled him to exercise and literally train the ear to listen more efficiently. Together they delivered the improvements he was seeking. The complete program of the Tomatis Method (a program of auditory integration) requires a minimum of 60 hours of listening, using the sophisticated equipment available in accredited Tomatis Centers.
How Can You Use Solisten?
Solisten is an integrated package of advanced training, the Solisten device, professional headphones and customized programs employing the music of Mozart. Because it is a powerful program of auditory stimulation it is made available to qualified helping professionals. “Solisten Qualified Licensees” as they are designated provide the auditory integration program to their clients.
The Research
There is a large and ongoing volume of research, case studies and articles that provide extensive examples of the applications and successes of the Tomatis Method.

How Does the Solisten Program Work?
A Cayman Echoic Services Staff which are Solisten Qualified Licensee (SQL) will first evaluate your needs and develop a special program for you. The program runs for two phases of 15 days each. Each day you listen for two consecutive hours. After a break of 3-4 weeks, You listen for another 15-day period of two consecutive hours a day. During these periods, Cayman Echoic Staff (SQL) work on different activities while monitouring your progress.
Every situation is unique. In many situations, the initial 60 hours are sufficient.
In some situations, continual listening may be necessary over a longer period of time to achieve greater goals and desires. This is determined together with Cayman Echoic Staff as the program progresses.
The Equipment
The equipment is state of the art, consisting of a digital player preloaded with music processed through the Tomatis Electronic Ear and professional headphones that provide both air and bone conduction to accurately produce the Tomatis Effect.
What is the Training of the Solisten Qualified Licensee?
A Solisten Qualified Licensee (SQL) has in-depth training and understanding of the work of Dr. Tomatis. SQLs are trained to recognize individual needs and to choose the specific programs based on the needs of their clients. SQLs, before being trained, are required to have the educational credentials and relevant experience in order to be accepted by Solisten LLC.
Are There Differences between the Tomatis Method and Solisten?
Yes and no. Both provide the renowned Tomatis Effect. Tomatis developed specific functions in the Electronic Ear that provide gating and two delays processed through the EE and relayed through special headphones with bone and air conduction. The result of these programmed and combined functions is called the Tomatis Effect.
Dr. Tomatis began his work with individuals, working with their voices. He invented the Electronic Ear to strengthen speech and voice quality. While the Tomatis Method offers active voice work, Solisten obtains the renowned Tomatis Effect without active work and voice recordings.
Solisten begins with an initial interview and screening. It does not require the Tomatis Listening Test.

The Tomatis Effect
Solisten® provides the Tomatis® Effect, which is based on the well-known results of the work of Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis (1920-2001). Dr. Tomatis, a French Ear, Nose and Throat physician, pioneered a multi-disciplinary science called Audio-Psycho-Phonology (APP) over 50 years ago. His work resulted from his curiosity about the influence of the human ear on a healthy mind and body. Tomatis noted that language learning begins with a mother’s voice in the womb.
He developed, researched and proved his theory: the voice only produces what the ear hears. His theory was independently confirmed at the Sorbonne in 1957 and became known as the Tomatis Effect. The Tomatis Effect is summarized in three Tomatis laws:
He discovered that listening problems are the root cause of many learning difficulties. Ultimately, Tomatis developed a highly effective technique to remedy learning concerns called the Tomatis Method, and the Electronic Ear, proprietary electronic equipment to stimulate the ear. The Solisten program employs the Tomatis Method and, at minimum, is 60 hours of listening given in two 15-day intensives.
A New Understanding of the Ear
The Tomatis Method is based on a new understanding of the ear which draws a critical distinction between listening and hearing. Listening is a high level cognitive function connecting the ear to a healthy brain.

- The voice only contains what the ear can hear.
- If the hearing is modified, the voice is immediately and unconsciously modified.
- It is possible to durably transform phonation when auditive stimulation is maintained over a certain time (the law of duration or remanence).

Listening Versus Hearing – The Tomatis Effect
Hearing is the passive reception of sound while listening is the active participation in what one hears. It is possible to have good hearing, but poor listening. Dr. Tomatis found that by improving your listening, you can improve your day-to-day functioning in many areas.
The ear plays a unique and critical role in our daily living. The positive effects of good listening are far-reaching and are based on key physiological understandings, which have become known over the last few decades. For instance:
The ear plays a unique and critical role in our daily living. The positive effects of good listening are far-reaching and are based on key physiological understandings, which have become known over the last few decades. For instance:
- The ear is the first organ to grow in uterus and is fully functional at 4 ½ months gestation.
- Sound is critical in normal human development, particularly language development.
- The ear and nervous system are intricately connected.
- The ear is connected to the body through three tracts Tomatis called integrators:
- Vestibular (or somatic) integrator for body image, movement
- Visual (or spatial) integrator for ear/eye connection
- Cochlear (or linguistic) integrator for brain stimulation
How Does the Tomatis Effect Improve Listening?
The pedagogical tool of the Tomatis Method is called the Electronic Ear. The Electronic Ear is a system which takes advantage of and reactivates the strategies involved in perceptive organization and in the management of one’s sound environment which the brain is normally able to use when listening is undisturbed.
Dr. Tomatis found that listening is disturbed when there is a dysfunction of the two muscles located in the middle ear. The role of these muscles is to enable the precise and harmonious integration of acoustic information in the inner ear, and from there to the brain. When the brain is disturbed, it triggers protective mechanisms which inhibit listening.
Solisten stimulates the middle ear muscles and starts the change process that the Tomatis Effect provides.

Clinical vs. Empirical Data on the Tomatis Effect
Many professionals find the underlying science behind the Tomatis Effect critical to their acceptance of its profound effectiveness. So far, many of the available clinical studies are in foreign languages, difficult to find, or directed to just one result. These results can be helpful for a specific subject, but not applicable across all situations. While there are clinical studies in progress as we write, they are incomplete.
H.A. Stutts, in a review of the current Tomatis research (1983) revealed that the Method may lead to an increase in I.Q, better communication and reading skills and the ability to express verbally thoughts and feelings.
